In 2017, Gilles was appointed Deputy Commander of the Navy. He oversees the well-being of 10,000 regular, reserve and civilian sailors, as well as the navy’s budget. Karim Ganame

Founder, President and Head of Cybersecurity, Streamscan

With a PhD in cybersecurity, Karim Ganame has 19 years’ experience in IT, 17 of which in the field of information security. After working for several years as a senior information security consultant in major corporations, he founded Montreal-based StreamScan AI Inc.

With a strong focus on R&D and innovation, StreamScan has brought to market Quebec’s first computer intrusion detection system (IDS). This tool, called CDS, uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect anomalies and new-generation cyber threats targeting computer networks. Cyber-threats detected by CDS are then automatically blocked to minimize or eliminate their impact. StreamScan’s CDS was selected as a national innovation by the Canadian federal government. This has led to two major projects, notably with Defence Canada and the Communications Security Establishment of Canada. Streamscan’s CDS technology is currently being used to protect the networks of many organizations in the manufacturing, aerospace, defense, pharmaceutical and SME sectors, both in Quebec and internationally. Streamscan also offers a proactive SOC/MDR cybersecurity monitoring service, and is very active in cybersecurity incident management & cyberattack response. In September 2023, Streamscan launched an advanced EDR (EndPoint Detection and Response) antivirus. This technology integrates the functionality of a traditional antivirus with advanced AI-based scanning capabilities to enhance the protection of computers and servers. Cybersecurity researcher Dr Karim Ganame is the author of a US patent on the use of AI to detect cyberthreats. He is also the author of several international publications in world-renowned academic journals and conferences. He holds the highest certifications in computer intrusion detection and security incident response (GIAC GCIH, GCIA), as well as CISSP certification. He regularly assists organizations in managing the cybersecurity incidents that impact them, particularly cases of ransomware. He also specializes in the protection of military and defense infrastructures. As a CMMC RP, he is officially authorized to support organizations doing business with the US Department of Defense (DoD) in their CMMC cybersecurity certification process. Dr Karim Ganame also teaches cyber security at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Finally, he is a well-known lecturer in Quebec and regularly gives his opinion on cybersecurity issues in the media.

* Innovations and challenges in marine steels for polar icebreaker manufacturing - a comprehensive review – (30 min.)

Mousa Javidani

Professor, Applied Sciences Department, Ph.D, Université du Québec à Chicoutimi

Abstract

As interest in the polar regions grows, countries like China, the US, and Russia are investing in new icebreakers. Operating in the Arctic requires ship designs that can withstand extreme conditions, including temperatures ranging from -60 to 30 °C. Selecting suitable steel grades is crucial for these environments. Hull components of polar-class icebreakers must possess adequate toughness at low temperatures, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance to endure ice pack collisions. Welding is essential in shipbuilding to ensure strong joints that maintain a ship’s structural integrity. The welding methods can produce defects like porosity, cracks, undercut, and lack of fusion, compromising weld quality and strength. Optimizing welding parameters and using post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) can enhance welded joints’ microstructure and mechanical properties.

The demand for polar icebreakers and advanced steel grades with high strength and low-temperature toughness is growing. Addressing ship design and structural performance challenges in the Arctic is essential for safe and efficient navigation. Ongoing research and technological advancements will be crucial in overcoming these challenges and enhancing polar icebreakers’ capabilities. In addition to a thorough literature survey, we have also conducted experimental trials characterizing three marine steels. The analyzed steels include two EH36 grades, produced through quenching and tempering (Q&T) and thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP), respectively, as well as CSA 60W, processed by hot rolling (HR). Microstructural characterization was performed using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), alongside mechanical testing that included hardness, tensile, and Charpy impact tests over varying temperatures. The results indicated that EH36 processed by TMCP is the optimal choice for polar icebreaker applications, meeting all ABS requirements with a balanced combination of strength, ductility, and impact energy absorption

Expansion Joints for naval mechanical systems not just an expansions story!

Expansion joints in ship engines and mechanical systems are critical components designed to accommodate thermal expansion, movement, and vibrations. They also play a vital role in reducing noise and vibrations transmitted to the ship's structure. Many studies and manufacturers provide generalized figures for typical reduction rates. The reduction of vibration and noise by expansion joints can vary depending on the type, material, and application of the joint.

Vietnam: review of business and recruitment opportunities in the naval sector

The Asia-Pacific region is home to more than half the world's population, and is the world's leading region in terms of economic growth. Thanks to the PTPGP, Canadian companies are well placed to take full advantage of the dynamism of the Asia-Pacific region, whether as a commercial hub or a base from which to expand. With a population of over 100 million, Vietnam is the Southeast Asian country with the strongest economic growth (+8.08%) in its region. A veritable dragon, Vietnam is also the world's 7th largest maritime power.

With its robust growth and investment-friendly policies, the country offers an ideal setting for companies seeking to prosper in the marine sector, including in the labor sector. With plans to develop seven specific sea-related economic zones by 2030, Vietnam is paving the way for unprecedented opportunities for investors and companies in the sector.

Symbiotic relationship between utilities, ferry operators and propulsion system integrators

In the ever-evolving world of passenger vessels and ferries, the marriage of cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices has become imperative. One pivotal aspect of this revolution is the collaboration between utilities, ferry operators, and propulsion system integrators. This presentation delves into the intricate interface and partnership that exists among these key players, shedding light on the importance of patience, early planning, and open communication in the journey towards efficient and eco-friendly ferry systems.

Embarking on a project that involves the integration of utilities, ferry operators, and propulsion systems demands a virtue often underestimated: patience. Shoreside developments are complex, requiring time to navigate through regulatory processes, environmental assessments, and community engagements.

The regulatory landscape, environmental impact studies, and community feedback play pivotal roles in determining the success and acceptance of the project. Propulsion system integrators, utilities, and ferry operators must work hand in hand to ensure that the project aligns with regulations, is environmentally responsible, and receives community support. Rushing through these aspects may lead to complications down the line, making patience an invaluable asset in the early stages of shore-side endeavors.

The interface and partnership between utilities, ferry operators, and propulsion system integrators represent a critical juncture in the evolution of passenger vessels. Patience, early planning, and open communication are the cornerstones of successful shore-side projects. As these key players continue to navigate the waters of innovation and sustainability, their collaborative efforts promise a future where ferry systems seamlessly blend efficiency, reliability, and environmental responsibility.
